The integration of partial joint penetration (PJP) groove / butt welds in IDEA StatiCa Connection addresses the specific requirements set by standards for PJP butt welds, distinct from those for fillet welds.

The size of a partial penetration weld is taken into analysis with the same value as inputted. IDEA StatiCa applies no adjustments, such as reduction of the nominal weld size - this is on the user side before the input.

Partial Joint Penetration (PJP) groove welds for AISC

IDEA StatiCa Connection offers PJP groove welds as an option for welds as per AISC 360 standards (2010, 2016, 2022 in table J2.5). Users can specify any weld that is edge-to-surface as a PJP weld in every manufacturing operation, e.g., weld or contact, fin plate, etc.

The checks are affected if the Base metal capacity at the fusion face is turned on in the Code setup. The Directional strength increase is not accounted for when using PJP welds.

For better reporting, special symbols for PJP welds and detailed formulas are provided, along with an adjusted analysis model that reflects accurate load-deformation curves and plastic stress redistribution.

In user-defined sections, a butt weld symbol with the correct effective throat thickness is displayed so that the produced drawings for reports are fully reliable.

The edge-to-rod type of PJP welding is not available and is converted to a full-penetration butt weld, which is not checked and is considered a part of the parent metal plate. Read about how to use rod member connections.

The ability to define PJP welds broadens the scope of design possibilities, allowing for more accurate and code-compliant projects.

PJP welds for CSA and AS

Partial joint penetration groove/butt welds are also available for Australian and Canadian codes.

Partial joint penetration is a typical weld type widely used in steel structural design, but not that easy to model thanks to their specifics. However, it was successfully implemented into other design standards – CSA S16-14; CSA S16:19 and AS 4100:2020.

The PJP weld type can be selected in any operation with welds.

PJP welds for Eurocode (EN)

Partial joint penetration butt welds (PJP) are very often used in situations when the design asks for a smooth geometry, e.g., end plates used for tubular cross-sections in architecture-sensitive structures. Butt welds are not cost-effective, so partial penetration joints are a good choice.

In dedicated operations, the PJP welds can be selected from the drop-down menu.
